ZIP Code Types: Standard, PO Box, Unique, and Military

Not all ZIP codes are created equal. Learn the four types and why the distinction matters for geocoding and analytics.

## Four Categories of ZIP Codes

The USPS classifies every ZIP code into one of four types. Understanding these categories is essential for address validation, geocoding, and demographic analysis.

| Type | Count | Description |
|------|-------|-------------|
| Standard | ~30,000 | Geographic delivery areas |
| PO Box | ~7,800 | Post office box clusters |
| Unique | ~2,100 | Single high-volume recipients |
| Military | ~400 | APO/FPO/DPO for armed forces |

## Standard ZIP Codes

Standard ZIPs cover a geographic area served by letter carriers. They are the only type that reliably maps to a physical territory. When you search for a ZIP code on a map, you are typically looking at the boundary of a standard ZIP.

These codes can cover areas as small as a few city blocks in dense urban areas or hundreds of square miles in rural regions.

## PO Box ZIP Codes

PO Box ZIPs are assigned to post offices that serve only PO Box customers — they have no delivery routes. Since there is no geographic service area, these ZIPs do not have meaningful boundaries on a map.

This creates a challenge for geocoding: a PO Box ZIP often maps to the post office location, not where the recipient actually lives.

## Unique ZIP Codes

Unique ZIPs are assigned to organizations receiving extremely high mail volumes. Examples include:

- **20500** — The White House
- **12345** — General Electric, Schenectady, NY
- **10199** — USPS Processing Center, New York

These organizations generate enough mail to justify their own sorting and routing.

## Military ZIP Codes

Military ZIPs use special city abbreviations:

- **APO** (Army/Air Force Post Office) with AA, AE, or AP "states"
- **FPO** (Fleet Post Office) for Navy and Marines
- **DPO** (Diplomatic Post Office) for embassies

The ZIP ranges 09000-09999 (AE/Europe) and 96200-96698 (AP/Pacific) are reserved for military use.

## Why Type Matters

If you use ZIP codes for demographic analysis or market research, mixing PO Box and Unique ZIPs with Standard ZIPs will distort results. Always filter to Standard-type ZIPs when calculating population density, income statistics, or geographic distances.
