What Is a ZIP Code?

ZIP codes are 5-digit codes used by the USPS to route mail efficiently. Learn what each digit means and how the system works.

## The Basics

A ZIP code is a 5-digit number assigned by the United States Postal Service (USPS) to identify a specific delivery area. The acronym stands for **Zone Improvement Plan**, introduced on July 1, 1963, to speed up mail sorting and delivery.

Before ZIP codes, postal workers relied on memory and local knowledge to sort mail. As mail volume surged past 60 billion pieces per year in the early 1960s, the USPS needed a systematic approach.

## How the 5 Digits Break Down

Each digit in a ZIP code carries geographic meaning:

| Position | Meaning | Example (10001) |
|----------|---------|------------------|
| 1st digit | National area (0-9) | 1 = NY/NJ/PA region |
| 2nd-3rd digits | Sectional center facility (SCF) | 00 = Manhattan SCF |
| 4th-5th digits | Specific post office or zone | 01 = Midtown zone |

The first digit divides the country into 10 broad regions, starting with 0 in the Northeast and ending with 9 on the West Coast.

## How Many ZIP Codes Exist?

As of 2024, the USPS maintains roughly **41,700 active ZIP codes** across the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and other territories.

ZIP codes are not permanent. The USPS regularly adds new codes for growing communities, retires codes when post offices close, and reassigns boundaries as population patterns shift.

## Types of ZIP Codes

Not all ZIP codes represent geographic areas:

- **Standard** — The most common type, covering a geographic delivery area
- **PO Box only** — Assigned to clusters of PO Boxes at a post office
- **Unique** — Reserved for a single high-volume address (e.g., the IRS, large corporations)
- **Military** — APO/FPO/DPO codes for armed forces mail overseas

Understanding these distinctions matters for geocoding, demographic analysis, and address validation.
