The city, town, or municipality component of a mailing address, which must match the USPS-recognized name for the delivery ZIP code.
In a USPS address, the city name on the last line (along with state and ZIP code) must be a name the USPS recognizes for that ZIP code. Each ZIP code has one or more acceptable city names: a 'default' city name and sometimes several 'acceptable' aliases. For example, ZIP 10001 defaults to 'New York' but might also accept 'Manhattan.'
The USPS-recognized city name may differ from the municipality in which an address physically sits. An address might be within the city limits of one municipality but use a different USPS city name because the ZIP code is associated with a neighboring community. This mismatch is common in suburban areas.
For international addresses, the city or locality name follows country-specific conventions. In the UK, the 'post town' may differ from the administrative district.
