Eircode

Ireland's 7-character alphanumeric postal code system launched in 2015, designed to identify every individual address in the country.

Eircode was introduced on July 13, 2015, making Ireland one of the last European countries to adopt a nationwide postal code system. Each Eircode consists of a 3-character routing key (identifying a postal district or area) followed by a 4-character unique identifier assigned to an individual address. For example, D08 X2F0 points to a single property in Dublin 8.

Unlike most postal code systems that group addresses by geography, Eircode assigns a unique code to every residential and business address — roughly 2.2 million addresses in total. This design was influenced by Ireland's rural addressing challenges, where many homes lack formal street numbers.

Eircode is managed by the state-backed company Eircode (formerly Capita Business Support Services Ireland). The system is used by emergency services, e-commerce delivery, and government agencies.
