## The Military Mail System
When American service members deploy overseas, they don't use local postal systems. Instead, the USPS operates a parallel military mail network using special ZIP codes, city names, and state codes.
## Military Address Components

## How Military Mail Works
The journey of a letter to a deployed soldier:
1. **Sender** mails letter with APO/FPO address and ZIP
2. **Local post office** routes it like domestic mail (same postage rates)
3. **Military Mail Terminal** (usually a major hub like JFK or Chicago O'Hare)
4. **Military airlift** to the overseas theater
5. **In-theater distribution** to bases, ships, or forward operating locations
## Domestic Postage Rates
A crucial benefit: mail to APO/FPO/DPO addresses uses **domestic postage rates**, not international rates. A letter to a soldier in Germany costs the same as a letter to a neighbor across the street.
This was a deliberate policy decision to ensure service members and their families can communicate affordably.
## Holiday Mail
The USPS publishes annual holiday mailing deadlines for military addresses:
