Urban Cluster
A Census-defined densely settled area with a population between 2,500 and 49,999, representing small cities and large towns.
Urban Clusters (UCs) are the smaller counterpart to Urbanized Areas. They represent small cities, college towns, and suburban communities that are densely settled but fall below the 50,000 threshold for Urbanized Area designation. The 2020 Census identified approximately 1,258 Urban Clusters.
Like Urbanized Areas, Urban Clusters are built from contiguous Census blocks meeting density criteria. They do not follow municipal boundaries — a UC may include parts of multiple municipalities or only a portion of one.
In ZIP code databases, Urban Cluster presence indicates a moderately dense settlement pattern. This classification is useful for logistics planning, market segmentation, and understanding the urban-rural continuum.
