Military ZIP Code

Special ZIP codes using pseudo-state codes APO, FPO, and DPO to route mail to U.S. military installations and diplomatic posts worldwide.

The USPS uses three pseudo-state abbreviations for military and diplomatic mail: APO (Army Post Office / Air Force Post Office), FPO (Fleet Post Office, for Navy and Marine Corps), and DPO (Diplomatic Post Office, for U.S. embassies and consulates). Each military installation is assigned a ZIP code in one of three pseudo-state ranges: AA (Armed Forces Americas), AE (Armed Forces Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Canada), and AP (Armed Forces Pacific).

Military ZIP codes allow service members and diplomats to send and receive mail at domestic postage rates, regardless of the actual overseas location. Mail addressed to an APO/FPO/DPO is routed through military postal channels, not the foreign country's postal system.

These ZIP codes are excluded from Census tabulations and geographic databases because they do not correspond to domestic delivery areas.
