Intelligent Mail Barcode
A 65-bar barcode used by the USPS since 2013 that encodes delivery point information, mail class, sender ID, and tracking data in a single symbology.
The Intelligent Mail barcode (IMb) replaced the older POSTNET and PLANET barcodes, combining routing and tracking information into a single barcode printed on letter-size and flat-size mail. The IMb encodes a 31-digit data string that includes the barcode ID (mailer-assigned tracking number), service type ID (mail class and handling), mailer ID (identifying the sender), and routing code (delivery point ZIP+4+2).
IMb is the foundation of the USPS Informed Visibility program, which provides mailers with near-real-time scan data as their pieces move through the processing network. This visibility allows senders to know when mail is delivered and to predict in-home dates.
Since January 2013, the IMb has been mandatory for mailers claiming automation postage discounts. Full-service IMb users (who submit electronic documentation and unique tracking numbers) receive additional postage savings.
